Yes, it’s generally safe to walk to the Strip from Harry Reid Airport. Below is how to do the walk to stay safe.

  • If you do walk to the Strip from the airport, make sure you’re walking down the Paradise side heading out of the airport toward Tropicana Ave, instead of the University Center side. Both are one-way streets.
  • Unfortunately, there are several homeless people and run-down apartments on the University Center side.
  • If you look the route up on Google Maps, it will say it’s about a 50-minute walk to the Strip. That’s accurate.
  • Stay on Tropicana as it will take you all the way to the Strip.
  • Walking down the MGM side (north side) is best. MGM Grand is the easiest resort to get to as well. Plus, if you get thirsty, there are places near the Bluegreen Resort you can pop into.
  • The only place where you might run into a rough spot is near the gas station at Tropicana and Koval. That’s why we said, if you’re thirsty, you should go to the places by Bluegreen Resort.

Don’t forget, looks can be deceiving. And remember, just because you can see it, doesn’t mean that it’s close.

Contrary to what tech companies would like you to believe, the Las Vegas Taxi is the most ideal way to get from Harry Reid Airport to the Las Vegas Strip and back to Harry Reid Airport.

Something drivers tend to hear from passengers that haven’t been to Vegas for a while when leaving Harry Reid Airport is, “Don’t take the tunnel!” While that may have been “sage advice” that you received from some other website or your friend who’s been to Las Vegas thousands of times, there’s really no longer any reason to say that to a driver. Why? Because there are now flat rates, which started around December 2019.

Flat rates were introduced to help combat “long hauling” and to compete with ridesharing companies. The benefit of the flat rate to the passenger is that they have a consistent rate that they know they will pay (no surge pricing), without having to worry about being taken a long way around. The benefit to the driver is they can take the fastest route to the hotel or airport, regardless if it’s via the surface streets or the airport tunnel.

The airport serves as a base for Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Spirit Airlines.

The airport is named after U.S. Senator Harry Reid, who represented Nevada in the Senate from 1987 to 2017. Between 1968 and December 14, 2021, the airport was called McCarran International Airport.

Before 1968, it was named McCarran Field after U.S. Senator Pat McCarran, who represented Nevada from 1933 to 1954.
