Disney California Adventure: 13 Magical Moments
Disney California Adventure sits right next to Disneyland in Anaheim, and it tells its own story: California’s history, culture, and coastline, reimagined through Pixar, Marvel, and classic Disney magic. Notable Moments Worth a Closer Look
a bug’s land Opens (October 7, 2002)
Disney California Adventure went small to think big. a bug’s land put guests at bug-size scale, based on the world of A Bug’s Life. Oversized blades of grass and towering leaves made every corner a photo op.
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Opens (May 5, 2004)
The park’s first true thrill ride landed in Hollywood Land. Guests stepped into a haunted hotel elevator and dropped, again and again, in a randomized sequence that never played the same way twice.
Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! Opens (January 23, 2006)
This dark ride sent guests racing through Monstropolis alongside Mike and Sulley, dodging the Child Detection Agency along the way. It brought the world of Monsters, Inc. to life years before the sequel hit theaters.
Toy Story Midway Mania! Opens (June 17, 2008)
Toy Story Midway Mania! turned the park into a giant carnival midway. Guests pulled string-launcher toy cannons and racked up points across a series of 4D games, and it’s stayed one of the most popular rides in the park ever since.
World of Color Debuts (June 10, 2010)
World of Color turned Paradise Bay into a nighttime stage. Fountains, lights, lasers, and fire synced to Disney soundtracks, and it quickly became a must-see closer for a day at the park.
The Little Mermaid, Ariel’s Undersea Adventure Debuts (June 3, 2011)
This dark ride carried guests under the sea with Ariel, Sebastian, and Flounder, retelling the film through practical sets and animation. It gave Paradise Gardens Park a new anchor attraction.
Cars Land Opening Ceremony (June 14, 2012)
Cars Land turned Radiator Springs into a full-scale, walkable land, complete with neon signs, red rock formations, and the Radiator Springs Racers. It’s widely credited as the moment that transformed the park’s reputation.
