Downtown Las Vegas is Getting a New Welcome Sign

Well, it looks like it’s finally happening. The city of Las Vegas should soon be replacing the rather LARGE banner that would welcome people into downtown, with a brand new shiny one. Have you forgotten what banner sign looked like?

Yup! That sign. Although you couldn’t miss seeing the sign, many thought that the city could have done a much better job at encouraging people to drive past the SLS, then the Stratosphere, and keep going to Downtown Las Vegas.

Downtown Las Vegas use to have a sign that read Welcome to Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas, similar to the sign near Mandalay Bay, for several years. It was located where 4th Street splits off from Las Vegas Blvd. North, north of Olympic Gardens. That was until it was struck in 2016 by a truck and destroyed. This is what the sign used to look like.

Using the city’s current Las Vegas logo, the new sign will include arches into its design. There’s a bit of a discrepancy as to where the new sign will go. Some have said it will be in the same location as the old sign. But from the rendering below, it looks as though the sign will straddle Las Vegas Blvd. North on what appears to be the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower property. Both on the hotel side and what I believe is their land, a parking lot, across the street.

At any rate, the cost of the new sign is estimated to be $60,000 and will be a vast improvement over the banner sign, as I’m sure you will agree.
